Don't be surprised if you are sore the day after working a major muscle group (especially legs), or even longer. There is such a thing as over-training, both in weight training and in combat sport. Let your body tell you what to do.

I've spoken to a personal trainer who says that the body only needs eight hours to recover from exercise... I'm not sure my body is average enough, though, I'm still hurting after doing squats and deadlifts yesterday morning (then getting mangled by BJJers 12 hours later) :-s

Hi Mate As you do BJJ 3 x a week which should provide you with enough cardio look at doing an upper body workout on tuesday and lower body thursday look at doing big compound exercises to increase strength and power with 2 days rest.

A good site is bodybuilding.com they can offer good advice for all types of training.

I think training on the days that you don’t do bjj and sparring. So you have 3 days working out with weight and three days BJJ and cardio training from the sparring and one recovery day. I lift weight home before I go working. There are nice weightlifting programs dvd on the market you can follow them along. Chalean extreme is good.

I do my strength training on the off days from my regular krav classes. I often do it same day as my cardio/heavy bag workouts.

A question for those of you who spar and also lift weights:

If I am doing BJJ 3x a week and I want to do some strength exercises as well, when is the best time?

I train BJJ Mon, Wed, Fri evenings and each session usually includes a good 30-45 mins of sparring (sometimes more). If I do strength exercises on the same day before going to class I'll be wiped out and have no juice for sparring. If I work out the day before BJJ my body will be in recovery. If I stress it with sparring will that be counter-productive (to either/both?)

Is my only option to work out straight after each class?
