No other hold is better then being able to watch your opponent writhe in pain. Being able to see your opponent like this or have your opponent see you in agony while locked in a figure four... hot.
Well... maybe better would be in the indian deathlock where you get that while just standing over them as well. Pure domination.
One of the best technical holds in that it is nearly unbreakable and provides multiple damage possibilities as an ankle lock and shin nerve compression on the crossed leg, and a possible hyperextension of the knee joint on the straight leg. A great test of pain threshold to be in and very hot to watch placed on others!

So what do people like about it?
For me, there are 4 key things (am sure there are more too):
(1) Locked on right, means total control of the opponent
(2) It's one of very few holds that you have to watch the hold being locked on to you and then you are face to face throughout
(3) If the both are wearing boots, the feel and sound of them locked and rubbing together
(4) My favourite part, seeing a guys calve muscle flexing up in the hold
It is very humiliating when put in the hold... Rival smiling and looking at my frustration and expression of pain. My gal hates to watch me trapped in this hold in a ring...
I've been in the figure four a couple of times. No escape. And the guy was smiling and looking right at me waiting for me to submit to him. Would love to apply it, dread finding myself trapped in again.
