I dont do anything. I want it to hurt. So why get stronger and stronger abs. Nothing better than a soft or big belly to beat hard.

Why to extend the fun, and give your opponent a workout in the process. You drop out after 10 punches and the fun is over before I'm even warmed up. How often does that happen? Too often.

I do extended crunches 3 or 4 days before a workover. I've been worked over 30 times in the last 3 yrs and THAT really helps build them up.

I tend to do a lot of weighted ab work, which includes cable crunches, weighted knee raises and partial deadlifts. My goal here is to increase ab muscle thickness which then creates deeper cuts. All this with the aim of growing a solid wall of ab muscle

OK, I'm impressed. Wow. Same height, 16# on me, and ripped. And 31. Now I'm scared :-)

As for me, i do a variety of fairly heavy abs work, most often in tension (takes stress off the spine, hey, I'm old!). Windmills, inverted crunches hanging from a bar, weighted cable crunches, cable twists (obliques, etc.)

works.

Thats exactly the way I train. I change my overall workouts every 28 days. I like hanging leg raises. Weighted. No weights but high reps. I go to total failure. My ab wall feels like its ripping in half but I only have to tighten up to 30% and I can actually take a lot of punishment, pleasureable punishment. I do cable crunches 50 reps ar 165 pounds 50 reps at 175 pounds then 50 at 185 pounds. I work my obliques the same way

What he said, maybe a bit less extreme. When i say "windmills" and "inverted cruch" i basically mean:

1. hang from bar (curl yourself up and get double duty)
2. Curl your spine (important) and get your feet above your hands
3. Straight, and twisting to both sides.
4. Hold at top.

This will work top-to-bottom and is heavy weight (you).

Cable crunches are excellent too. I use the double-reduction machine for minimal intertidal with 42-57 lbs on it, go slow, and hold the crunch at the bottom.

Regardless of what exercize one does, going to near failure is important if you really want to progress. Going through the motions wastes everyones time.

Rant off :-)

there is nothing better than taking punches to get tough abs. if you can't do that, there are exercises that are also good for preparation.
doing 1000 crunches is nice but uneffective. i found that leg lifts with variations work pretty well, especially if you do them slowly and hold your feet in the lowest position as long as you can without touching the floor. hanging leg lifts (full move, as high as possible) or pullups in l-sit position are also good for real abs strength. If that's too easy, do dragon flags. And never forget side abs and twist movements, you can integrate them into almost any exercise. this helps to flex better and absorb harder hits because the energy is distributed to more muscle groups in your abs.

at least this is what i found out :)

"doing 1000 crunches is nice but uneffective."

Agree. Light. tedious. And tons of wear and tear on spinal joints.

I love to stand at arms length with a workout partner and have him forcefully shove a 16 pound solid or two handled medicine ball forcefully into my gut as many times as I can take. Then we trade places. Your abs are on FIRE. it works as well as being punched. its pretty close to knees.

If the abs are really strong, your fist won't sink in.

I do a lot of cardio, but nothing to strengthen my gut muscles. I want to feel the deepest impact possible.

I'm the opposite of the other posters here...I work my abs at the gym but when I did punching sessions more regularly I would mentally train myself to be able to stay relaxed but also to be able to handle the pain of a deep impact for a long time.

Aside from the regular abs workout and cardio, sometimes I do leg lifts and sit-ups with alternating gut punches. Also I drop a medicine ball on my abs, swing a punching bag at my abs, and rarely get a willing pal who wants to gut box me as I stand there with arms behind my back or head!
