I was thinking of a gladiator chessgame....with living fighters in different armour and weapons...one team in white and one in black loincoth simple fighters just with a spear as weapon and without further armour, but also warriors on horses, heavily armoured fighters and of course a king in full protection and amazon queens. Everytime fighters meet on a square on the arena chessfield they have to fight merciless to the death. I would like to be a simple fighter with just a spear to protect my bare, hairy chest!
For me, exciting gladiatorial fights occur when the combattants are mismatched. A 21-year-old who is 5' 10" and weighs 11 stone may have widely different strength and stamina from a 26-year-old of the same height and weight.
So, imagine if one is 32 years old, 6'6" and 16 stone and the other is 23 years old, 5'9" and 11 stone.
I am not a great fan of heavily armored gladiators with hefty swords, helmets and visors, and large shields.
Lighter weapons, still lethal, are usually more exciting.
In the arena, therefore, I would pit two men against each other who have a clear age difference with different weapons. (Lithe athleticism vs dour determination.)
Different ages, different specialized weaponry, different skin colour denoting different tribal backgrounds, even different coloured loin cloths - these factors would enhance the clash between the two gladiators, in my opinion.

So, recently we saw a lot of interesting gladiator and arena pictures....but to start more conversation/ discussion, I would like to know, what are your favourite gladiator phantasies? What would be your outfit, weapon and fighting style?
