The duel between a trident and net man (retiarius) and a swordsman (secutor) is one of the most thrilling in the gladiatorial arena.
The retiarius tries to defeat his man by penetrating his trident into the other's body or by trapping his man's feet in the net, unbalancing him and sending him to the sand. The secutor tries to defeat his man by injuring him in the legs thereby robbing him of his nimbleness. The death-battle of such different males - muscle versus agility - makes for an excellent play fight.
