If you have a car, Schaumburg has lots of cheap decent options with free parking.
If you don't have a car and/or prefer public transit, there are a few out by O'Hare - near the Cumberland station or Rosemont station.
Downtown tends to be the most expensive option, with no free parking.
Good luck if you want to venture to the motels (eg, Heart o' Chicago).. sketchy/sleazy and not as cheap as they used to be.
In terms of hotel chains, Hyatt Place tends to be the most consistent setup. Carpeted floors, a separate sitting area, and King size beds.
Last but not least, there's always Priceline bids if price is the most important factor.
