The Catfish Rubric for Meetfighters

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I wanted to get some thoughts out of my head and onto (figurative) paper for 2023 and one concerns CATFISHING and Meetfighters!

I think most would agree Meetfighters has a particularly welcoming format for catfish due to most men/women on the site being discreet due to the nature of the fetish being acceptable in mainstream society; this allows catfish to use this as a veil when interacting with others.

This, coupled with possible scarcity of potential opponents in certain areas (or so many opponents in populated areas), sometimes makes us vulnerable to falling for the guise of catfish within our own community due to 'really really wanting him/her to be real'.

So, what do we do about it? Well, if someone is set out to dupe you online, there are some "red flags" that we can take into account, even before messaging the potential opponent!

I have created a rubric of sorts that you can utilize with some common questions/points of contention when trying to uncover typical catfish behavior online. This will allow you to tally up points for the PRO and the CON of someone being a potential catfish and maybe sway you into making a better judgement about a new account in your area, or even one of those accounts with one opponent listed in the community!

Please let me know your thoughts! (Also, in my experience I am very wary of new accounts so I would suggest anyone wait a week or two to see what becomes of a new account in general)

The Potential Catfish:

Has pictures posted in the last 30 days,
offers face pic upon request if not posted

Has Bio completely filled out, with detailed info
about what they are looking for

Cannot host and does not have alternatives listed,
"Just looking for now"

Multiple locations listed in metropolitan areas

When messaged, it is hard to set up a time and place
in the near future

These are just a couple of points I use for myself, but please list more in the comments!

Neat idea, but don’t really know..any of those points can really be applied to nearly all members on the site..

I think its a culmination of the “cons” from this list that can help educate the decisions you make when dealing with a possible catfish account.

Youll never know 100% but I like to think about these points when I’m in the moment of “Oooo new person in the area!!” and get swept away thinking of setting up a match thats never going to happen.

New members are always hit and miss, people may just be checking out the site.

I’d be more concerned if there was a person on the site who had been here for 3+yrs and yet have never met up with anyone. Yet they actively ask or have it listed that they are looking for matches.

Very true! That’s definitely a red flag!

Having dealt with a plethora of fakes from fetlife one big helping tell tale is having people communicate their experiences with profiles. To have people be marked as time wasters as well as Catfish.

If someone has a busy schedule, it's not easy to find the time to meet up, so I don't believe having one opponent is any indication.
-Consider looking closely at the photos and seeing if the corresponding features match, or whether the photo details/ location fits what they've said in their profile/ messages. That's helped me- on here and other sites. It's a pity that this happens, especially when it seems like there's a good connection.

Thats really good advice! I do find it gets easier to spot them the longer youve been on the site.

Background in the pics is a great tip!

'morning SCA.

Simple: "too good to be true" (generally pics).

The % of newbies with amazing pics that are pulled down as catfish or sock puppets within days/hours is shocking.

I'm honestly not sure what the are trolling for....

see you soon (unless, of course, you are a catfish!)

I have to clarify when I wrote "corresonding features" I was referring to physical ones on someone's body.
