when is an opponent an opponent?

I often wonder when I should mark someone as a past opponent? Does a three minute, five minute bout count?

To me opponent means just that. A potential equal you have tested yourself against in a match.

I have wrestled some guys (a lot of guys) who have been a lot better then me and kindly wrestled down.

Some guys have wrestled with me to give me tips and has been more of a lesson. I am unsure about marking them down as opponents but would recommend them.

Not into the number collection of opponents. Always wanted my profile to be honest and represent my real experiences.

So if I have recommended someone but not marked them as a past opponent that is why. I have wrestled with them but not had a match per se as a lesson with a bit of give and take.

That's for those who have been asking ;)

This is strange. How can you recommend someone unless you know what it is like to actually have a match with them?

Personally I mark everyone whom I wrestle, even if the match is not that great (although most of them are).

I have wrestled with them but its not exactly a competitive match.

Like if you have classes and wrestle the tutor. Its not as if they are an opponent. But you have wrestled them.

It's a very interesting question.

As someone who organises regular wrestling events, sometimes all we have time for is a 3 or 5 minute match.
I still view these as opponents because we have wrestled, even if the match was brief. Many attendees do the same.

It's not a matter of number collection but an acknowledgement to each other that we have wrestled. We often add a recommendation too.

As we know, there are many wrestling styles, not all of them competitive, so even when I've had a playful match with a much bigger guy, I still count him as an opponent. Especially when I've made them work up a sweat.

In the end though, what we put on our profile is our personal choice, so if someone moans at you for not saying you're a past opponent, then it's still your choice, not theirs. You have to do what you feel comfortable with.

That's exactly the context I was thinking of. No-one has moaned I haven't marked them as past opponent, just others wondered why I haven't marked but recommended. Wasn't sure of the etiquette. Seems I have been doing it wrong :-)

Hopefully will make it to one of your meets soon so can mark you down as a past opponent too, Matworker ;)

I'm pleased I could shed some light on the subject, though I'm not sure it's a matter of "right" or "wrong". You've been doing what you felt was right and as I said before, it's your choice what goes on your profile.

You'd be made very welcome at any of the events and I'd be honoured to have you as a past opponent. I hope we meet up soon :-)
